Embroidery Stitches on Knits

 

Embroidered elements add a whimsical, feminine touch to classic cardigans and pullovers. (Note: Sections of the sweaters shown were reknit in lighter colors to make the step-by-steps easier to follow.)

Sewing on Beads
Using a length of sewing thread that matches the bead color, bring needle and thread from behind work, then insert a bead onto the needle, as shown.

Bring the needle and thread through the bead; continue to insert needle through fabric and bead several times until the bead is secure.

French Knot
Thread yarn into a tapestry or yarn needle.With needle and yarn on wrong side of work, bring the yarn out at point A, as shown.

Wind the yarn twice around the needle, keeping
the needle close to the knitted fabric.

Turn needle approximately 90 degrees, holding twists in place. Reinsert needle at point A, pulling yarn gently to wrong side until knot is formed.

Straight Stitch
Bring yarn out at point A; insert needle at point B. Pull yarn to wrong side until a short horizontal
stitch is made. Do not pull too tightly.

Bring needle out at point C. Continue repeating from first step, keeping the desired space between the stitches even.

Lazy Daisy Stitch
Thread the yarn into a tapestry or yarn needle. With needle and yarn on wrong side of work, bring the yarn out at point A, as shown.

Wrap yarn around to make a loop. Holding loop with left thumb, reinsert needle at point A and out at point B, making sure that the loop is under the needle, as shown.

Pull yarn through, keeping loop in place with left thumb. Insert needle at point C (just above top of loop) and out at point D to begin the next lazy daisy stitch.

Cross-Stitch on Lattice
With needle and yarn on wrong side of work, bring the yarn out just under a red cross and insert just above the same cross; bring needle out under the red strand, as shown.

Insert needle to the right of the cross and out again under the next red cross to work another blue cross stitch.

Stem Stitch
Bring needle and yarn out at point A. Insert at point B and emerge at point C (halfway between A and B). Repeat process to desired length.

Bullion Stitch
Bring needle and yarn out at point A, insert at point B, emerge again at A and wrap the working yarn six times around the needle.

Holding the wraps with left hand, carefully pull the needle and yarn through the wraps and insert the needle back at point B.
